Where does Perth bore water come from?

Groundwater comes from rain which percolates down through the rocks and soils and into aquifers.

Aquifers are composed of sand, sandstone and limestone. Perth has three layers of aquifers which are the:

Superficial aquifer: The shallowest aquifer which stretches across the coastal plain. Superficial aquifers are located closer to the surface where we experience them as wetlands or lakes

Confined Leederville aquifer: This is located beneath the superficial aquifer. It is separated by confining layers which minimises water movement. The Leederville aquifer is often several hundred metres thick, and in some areas it connects with the surface

Confined Yarragadee aquifer: At another level below the Leederville aquifer – it’s the oldest aquifer that provides a robust supply even in dry years because of its vast storage and limited connection to the surface environment.”
